When asked the question “What do you want for your life?” often people do not have an answer. And guess what? If you don’t know what you want for your life there will be others who will decide for you or fill in that space with what “they” want for themselves. It’s up to you to make sure you get what you want; you just have to know what that is. So, take some time to look back over your life and think about what you know you DO NOT want. That’s much easier because it helps to rule out some things. It’s a process of elimination.
As you look back and reflect over how life has shown up for you, how do you wish for it to show up different? What do you want instead? Life will just happen, whether you do anything with it or not. So rather than just letting it turn out as it may, be intentional about what you want and make specific plans to see it come to fruition. After you have reflected and come up with some ideas, consider these three tips as well:
On a sheet of plain paper, draw a large circle. Now inside the circle, draw lines in it as if it’s a pie and you’re cutting slices. Make however many slices you want depending on the areas of life that are important to you. Say for example, you have four large quarter slices (or eight or ten, or whatever you wish), with values of say: family, relationships, education, finances, social activities, spiritual/ religious, physical health, emotional health and wellbeing, etc. Pick four of those or come up with four of your own and make each value a slice (however many slices you have). When looking at what’s important to you, consider the value you place on this. Are you giving it the time you really want to give it? Do you want to give more, or less? Moving forward, you will now spend the time you want when and where you want to spend it. That’s creating the life, and ultimately the love you really want. Update accordingly.
Get some magazines; any kind that seem to connect for you. Spread them out and sit in the middle of the floor or table. Going through each of them, with a notebook or tablet set aside, make a list of whatever jumps out at you, and note why. For example: I see a picture of a couple walking a scenic path holding hands. I would rip out the page or cut out the picture to remind me of something that’s important to me and note that I like the look and feel of the picture because it’s what I like and want for me in my life. The picture helps me create something personal for my own life that I really want. Keep turning the pages and create a new and different life for yourself. Look back on your new creation and see how it makes you feel. Move accordingly.
Make a list of the people you like to be around and note the reason why. Make a special note of how they tend to make you feel. Your feelings are telling you something about these relationships that you might want to pay close attention to. You get to decide what you do with this information. The ones that give you a good feeling, nurture those relationships; but the ones you get a not-so-good feeling from, consider making some changes.
For sure there are other things you can do to help you create the life and love you desire, but this is definitely a start in looking at the way things are going and making the decision to choose the way you WANT them to go. Be conscious about your life and what’s happening in it. It’s totally up to you to make sure you get what you desire. You just have to go through the process of knowing what that is and taking the necessary action to move forward.
