Listening Requires Focused Attention

If your relationship is important to you, then something you must do when you’re in a conversation, more than talk, is listen.

Listening is very important. It requires focused attention.

When you’re in a conversation with someone that matters to you, you can’t be all over the place doing several different things while they are talking to you. Would you want them to do this when you’re talking to them? You want to have their focused attention, don’t you?

Well, this is something to learn to do when you’re listening. Give it your focused attention. This just means that you’re not trying to do other things while listening. Turn off the TV. If you’re driving or riding together, turn off the radio. Be IN the conversation. Let them know that you’re there for them, as you would want them to be there for you.

This is a skill that strengthens relationships. Any relationship. Not everyone who is a friend listens; but anyone who listens to you intently when you’re in a conversation with them, is a friend.

So, the next time you’re in a conversation with someone, make it a point to really listen.
